The 10% Energy Challenge for Town of Putney
Many towns across Vermont* and the nation have undertaken a voluntary program called "The 10% Challenge", of reducing their energy consumption by at least 10%, often more. The Putney Energy Committee encourages the Putney towns people to support a referendum item in the upcoming town meeting that would require the town to reduce its energy consumption by at least 10%, per year over he previous year. Why?
It's important for our global environment: With the well-documented effects of global warming on our planet, it just makes sense to reduce the level of greenhouse gases that the Town of Putney is pumping into the air. On a local level, much concern has been raised about our region's warming trend and the effect it has had on our maple sugaring, tourist and skiing businesses.
It's important for own town, economicly as well ,helping to reduce energy costs in our annual budgets for electric and fuel consumption, will help us to curb costs and possibly lower taxes.
Major expense items for Putney;
- streetlights cost $300.00 to $500.00 each month.
- Additionally the cost of Heating fuel continues to rise
- Costs of Fuel for Town trucks.
It's important as a challenge to our fellow citizens to conserve energy in their own households; reducing additional greenhouse gases and freeing-up money that they could then spend in our community.
It's important as a message to our children, that caring citizens working collectively can make a difference.
In the town meeting resolution in Putney for the year 2003 - Article 27 - Voters of Putney adopted the following resolution:
Be it resolved that the citizens of Putney urgently call upon our municipal leaders, state legislators, governor and Congressional Delegation to put Vermont in the forefront of a sustainable energy future. Specifically, we request immediate and ongoing action and legislative initiatives designed to promote energy efficiency in Vermont's homes, businesses, public buildings and transportation systems, and to encourage expansion of the renewable energy industry in the State of Vermont.
PEC would like Putney Vermont to move on to the next step, please join us.
