Project: Street lighting replacement

The PEC street light project is just begining.

Our goal is to replace all street lamps in Putney with more energy efficient light bulbs and more concentrated lenses for less ambient light pollution. We will be conducting a survey to determine if some lights can be removed or turned off and we are looking into ways of using motion sensors and timers to lessen the usage of electricity by the town.

The town of Putney spends between $350.00 and $500.00 per month on electricity for street lamps alone. This is not including the lamps left on all night on the sides of buildings, like the fire house and the town hall. PEC believes there is room for improvement here and would like to see a 75% reduction in energy usage in the next year as bulbs are changed or removed or turned off (with smart switches, timers or motion sensors).

Putney has about 42 lamps and of these, 40 of the origional bulbs are the lower efficiency  (Mercury Vapor) version. Several of these have been replaced over the years so there may be some newer bulbs. Please see the Dark Sky association information sheet #52 for more information about the types of bulbs..

If you see PEC members walking around looking at the street lights on your block or road, please come out and say hi,and please let us know if you want your light turned off.
