| Project: Micro Hydro on Sacketts Brook |
|
The Sacketts brook in the center of Putney Vermont has long been used for hydropower. When mill owners needed to find a power source for their mills they looked towards their local water sources. They were able to harness the power that came from the falling water of local brooks and rivers by building dams and millponds. Their mills had many uses such as grinding corn, sawing wood into lumber, fulling cloth, and making paper products. One of Putney's most influential mills has been the paper mill. The mill has had to be rebuilt several times because of fires, but it has always been located near where it still stands today. PEC would like to harness this power for generation of electricity. The Town of Putney received approval for this grant funding from Vermont's Clean Energy Development Fund (CEDF) for a feasibility study of micro hydro on Sacketts Brook in April 2009.
