Project: Micro Hydro on Sacketts Brook

The Sacketts brook in the center of Putney Vermont has long been used for hydropower.

When mill owners needed to find a power source for their mills they looked towards their local water sources. They were able to harness the power that came from the falling water of local brooks and rivers by building dams and millponds. Their mills had many uses such as grinding corn, sawing wood into lumber, fulling cloth, and making paper products. One of Putney's most influential mills has been the paper mill. The mill has had to be rebuilt several times because of fires, but it has always been located near where it still stands today.

The mill was built along the Sackett's Brook near the home belonging to the Robertsons, a well-known mill family living in Christian Square. A short walk down Mill Street leads to the remains of the family's lower paper mill. The remains of Putney's active and diverse milling industry can be seen at the Sackett's Brook Conservation Site, now owned by the town of Putney. The Robertson family purchased the paper mill from Phineas White and Benjamin Smith in 1825. (Putney, The Fortnightly Club 1953) The Robertson brothers had been trained in the paper making industry before they immigrated to America from Scotland.

PEC would like to harness this power for generation of electricity. The Town of Putney received approval for this grant funding from Vermont's Clean Energy Development Fund (CEDF) for a feasibility study of micro hydro on Sacketts Brook in April 2009.
